Well that for fun > Getting better ...

pox
Well that was fun !!!

As you may know  I contracted Chicken Pox before Xmas, this can be quite serious in adults, and indeed caused me to run a fever of 38+ for a couple of weeks. As if that were not good enough the virus & fever managed to upset the apple cart further resulting in hospital / HDU  admission in to St Thomas's for Viral Meningitis.

I’m well on the way to recovery and have just a few days of the nasty anti viral drugs, and the sedating analgesics that accompany the side effects of the former, left to take. My liver is a bit grumpy from all the drugs & indeed I may have an ulcer from the analgesics used to control my fever, but both can be easily and quickly fixed without getting in the way I’m assured. I’m told I am very lucky !! Go figure …

I am a bit spaced out from the tablets (I’m being cheeky and getting some work done before taking the morning / evening dose) but am very much better. I’m taking the docs advice and resting to ensure that my recovery is indeed complete and permanent.

I’ve got some lovely tests (scan, lumbar puncture, endoscopy and bloods etc.) this week to get my MOT back. I fully expect to be in Coventry next Wednesday and back to work fully time from Monday. Anything that’s can wait till Monday would be great, otherwise give me a call. (and I’ll call you back).

PC is being switched off b4 I get in to more trouble.

Chicken Pox

Through the summer and autumn the liver seemed to be sorted and all was going well Open-mouthed

Then a rubbish set of blood tests and a meeting with the consultant, made all the more fun as I was sure I was coming down with a cold as my temp. held around 38.8c.

Then at 4am when the GP popped in to say hi as they do, it was told that I had Chicken Pox .. joy Angry

Still only 12 infectious days and 14 itchy, pooey, scratchy, fluey days to go.

Remind me next time you see me and things are fine to post some good news !!

Have a great Christmas .. I'll be thinking of you all from isolation Party

I'll post some pics later..  after youve eaten.

Help

Liver Failure

Hello,

Firstly so sorry if you have emailed or text’d and not had a reply .. there are only so many

Q  ‘How are you ?”

A   “Fine .. er rubbish ”

.. conversations to be had, but be assured that the messages are massively appreciated.

I don’t recommend a liver biopsy / laparoscopy, but it was not too bad ..  Today I got the results and the diagnosis is NASH (Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis),, in short my liver is not working to process sugars and fats correctly. It’s grossly inflamed (thats whats sore), failing and has build-ups of water and fat globules where the tissues should be.   Not unlike the liver of an alcoholic (I only drink a few glasses a week, and not having drunk since Xmas, they proved that alcohol isn’t the cause), or the obese (my body mass index is normal, not in the overweight range, and far from obese level that would be a risk factor), my liver is simply not doing its job as it should. I may have a degree of insulin resistance, yet this is borderline, subject to further investigation (and thought not in the diabetic range).  Whilst there are indicators such as alcoholism,  etc, I don’t fit in to any of thus usual profiles for NASH, which is not that uncommon as about 15% of hepatitis/ NASH suffers are cause unknown.  (exposure to toxins ? I've even been advised to move out of London!)

Bad news – good news – bad news.

Bad news – I’m now on the liver transplant list.

Good news – The professor still hopes to get my liver working, via a number of options (some experimental).  I have also bizarrely been advised to get a) lots and lots of rest and b) some exercise (the two seem counter intuitive but I’m told that lots of naps with a few bouts of gentle exercise can work very well )  . I’m under strict instruction to avoid all stresses. I’m also taking a special herbal teas (on the advise of a very wise man) and am being strict over diet and am taking all other sensible steps to give myself the best chance of recovery.

Bad news – The symptoms that I have been putting up with, look to be with me for a while, (till my liver is fixed or replaced), and its still ‘safer’ for me not to take any pain killers and to avoid alcohol (joy!). So I’m still quite poorly (I’m told you have to be to get onto the list ..), and will be out of circulation for a while more, to put it simply, I'm exausted (known effect of this condition) ..

So, sorry in advanced that I am fairly rubbish just now .. .. but am sure that I will be back .. sooner or later !

Thanks again for all your emails and texts and offers of help ..  Be sure I'll be in touch just as soon as ..

Regards Peter.
